In 2001, Nick Brandt embarked on an ambitious photographic project, a trilogy of books memorializing the vanishing natural grandeur of East Africa. Focusing on some of the worlds last great populations of large mammals elephants, giraffes, lions, gorillas and their kin he created two of the new centurys most influential photographic books: On This Earth (2005) and A Shadow Falls (2009). His iconic portraits of these majestic animals express an empathy usually reserved for human subjects. The magisterial On This Earth, A Shadow Falls collects the most memorable images from Brandts first two books, along with their accompanying essays. A testament to the bookmakers craft, it is the first volume on Brandts work to capture the superb quality of his remarkable, large format prints, which are notable for their velvet blacks and tonal subtleties.

Ce livre est tout simplement splendide,une grande qualité d'impression et des images fantastiques, qui changent des habituelles photos de faune africaine prise au téléobjectif. Ici Nick Brandt a utilisé un appareil moyen format argentique Pentax 67, avec des optiques moyennes (Pentax 55, 105 et 200mm, soit des équivalents 24x36 de 28mm, 55mm et 105mm), ce qui fait qu'il a du se tenir très près des animaux, et cela entraîne un rendu unique des images. Le rendu des flou et des transitions est superbe, tout comme les gammes de gris.Bref c'est du très bon boulot, achat à recommander à tout amateur de photographie !De plus cet ouvrage inclut des images de ces 2 premiers livres, car notamment il trouvait l'impression de son premier livre moyenne, pas à la hauteur de ses exigences, donc la qualité de ce livre ici est très haute, c'est encore mieux que d'acheter ses 2 premiers livres séparément.
